A celebration of all things insect will take place Saturday, Aug. 27, at War Bluff Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, 228 Bushwack Rd., Golconda. Sponsored by Shawnee Chapter Illinois Audubon Society, Insect Awareness & Appreciation Day will begin at 3 p.m. and continue into the evening with workshops, field trips, an insect zoo and insect crafts and activities. A potluck dinner will take place at 6 p.m.; the main dish and drinks will be provided; guests are asked to bring a dish to share. There will also be entertainment through the evening. Cache River State Natural Area will host Reptiles in the Neighborhood from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Barkhausen-Cache River Wetlands Center, 885 St. Rt. 37 S., Cypress. Become familiar with reptiles of southern Illinois, why reptiles are important to an ecosystem, how to tell the difference between many reptiles and much more through an up-close and personal interaction. Massac County Drug Awareness Coalition and 3D Life Recovery at Eastland Life Church will host an Overdose Awareness Night at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, on the Massac County Courthouse lawn. The event of remembering those lost to overdose is being held on International Overdose Awareness Day. The evening will include a candlelight vigil, prayer, music, speakers and a memorial to those lost to overdose.
The Bear on the Air will host a Butts for Mutts fundraiser for Project Hope No-Kill Humane Society in Metropolis. Pre-orders and payment are being taken now until noon Thursday, Sept. 1. The cost is $45 per butt. Orders will be ready for pickup from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at the shelter, located at 1698 W. 10th St. Bottles of Bear’s Famous BBQ Sauce will also be available for $5 extra. The Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 306 will host a Lucky Sevens event the first Saturday of each month at the legion hall, 321 Market St., Metropolis. The next event is Saturday, Sept. 3. University of Illinois Extension is hosting a community open house at its Plant a Row, Watch COPE Grow Community Food Donation Garden from 5-6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8. The outdoor event features garden demonstrations, kids’ activity stations, recipes highlighting the produce being grown, harvesting of the garden’s produce for the COPE Food Pantry and more. Seeds or starter plants may also be available for participants to use in or begin their own gardens.
